マソビョのお守り A Charm from Masobyo

Masobyo in Yokohama's China Town
I do not know much about Masobyo. I know that it's a Taoist temple of sorts, and I know that it was built relatively recently. I stumbled across it while exploring Yokohama's Chinatown.

I was hopelessly lost. I had to catch a train to get back to Shibuya to drop off my broken/moody laptop at the Apple store, and I was worried that I was going to miss my appointment. Finally, I swallowed my pride and strode up to the little omamori desk outside Masobyo to get directions to the train station.

There was this little old lady inside, and she was a darling. She drew a map for me, described the route in detail, and then walked me over to the curb to make sure that I knew where to go. I understood and was just about to leave when I was struck by the impulse to get something. It wasn't a conscious decision. This was from the days before I started consciously collecting omamori, before I sought them out. Maybe it was an unconsciously thank you for her help. I have no clue. But I'm glad I did because this little charm, like many in my collection, triggers a nice memory.

In addition to being the only Taoist charm in my collection, it is also the only glass omamori. This thing is a murder to photograph, and dozens of shots never really have done it justice. It has a gorgeous glittering gold cord, and on one side (not shown) is a horse.

A unique, zodiac-based omamori from Masobyo Taoist Temple in Yokohama's China Town
