南禅寺のお守り A Bell from Nanzenji

Like Byodoin and Ryoanji, Nanzenji is also a temple with a former detached palace. Nanzenji is a Zen temple, and it was founded during the Heian period.

Nanzenji is a lovely temple complex, but the buildings are not particularly memorable. This could be because the day I visited I stayed indoors. It was an incredibly peaceful place. An enthusiast Zen abbot led us through a zazen (seated meditation) in English, and while we sat on the floor in the fragrant hall, we listened to the rain pitter patter on the leaves in the garden and the birds gently coo. I am glad I purchased a bell, because it reminds me of the bell the abbot used to guide us out of our meditation. A nice experience.
